What is Whiplash?
Have you ever had pain in your neck from your heading jerking forward or backward? That is what whiplash is. A lot of people believe that whiplash only has to do with vehicle accidents. This is not true. Anytime your head is jerked in a rough motion forward or backwards you can get whiplash.
Four Major Types of Injury Occur
Muscle Injury
In most cases your muscles get stretched when you have an accident. As a result of this it can cause some swelling and sensitivity to your muscles that are in your shoulders or your neck.
Nerve Injury
Your nerves can be injured also. When your muscles get stretched so do your nerves, which cause them to be pinched. In most cases the reasoning for a pinched nerve is that either your headrest is not in the right spot, or your head was somehow turned during the whiplash.
Joint Injury
Since your joints are what let your bones move and keep your neck straight; your joints may be injured as well. If they are you will have a lot of pain in your shoulders and your arms.
Disc Injury
Discs are basically spacers that go in between your vertebrae. Whiplash can make your discs herniated, bulge, or even rupture which can bring pain or nerve irritation.
Whiplash does not just happen with car accidents. Many things can cause whiplash. For instance you can occur whiplash in any sports event, falls and slips, and even while you are out having fun at an amusement park on a roller coaster.
