What is Chiropractic Medicine?
According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges:

Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery.

The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

The Goal of Chiropractic Care
A common misunderstanding about chiropractic medicine is that chiropractors treat back and neck problems exclusively. While we certainly do provide relief from back and neck pain quickly and effectively, this is not fully summarize the entire goal of chiropractic treatment. As stated by The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, “the objective of chiropractic care is to optimize health”.

How Chiropractic Really Works
You might be curious: How is it possible that the very same chiropractic care which relieves by back pain also optimizes my health? To learn the answer to this question, let’s take a moment to examine the interrelationship of your nervous system and spinal column.

The nervous system is the command center of your entire body. It directs the symphony of cellular functions in all your living organs, tissues, and cells. The spinal column protectively sheaths the spinal cord and nerves which comprise the central hub of your entire nervous system.

Irritation in parts of the encased nervous system can occur due to structural and biomechanical problems and complications in the spinal column. Injury or direct and unnatural mechanical pressure may release particular biochemicals resulting in inflammation and irritation. Whether from injury or mechanical pressure, this irritation has a negative influence. This negative influence extends to not only the operation of the nervous system, but on cell, organ, and tissue function when they are supplied by the impaired nerve or nerves..

The condition or ailment which results is dependent primarily on two factors: the extent to which the nervous system has been negatively affected, and the actual cells, organs, and tissues affected.

In summary, providing correction to spinal column problems and abnormalities can yield tangible and favorable results in patients afflicted by a variety of health conditions which do not originally appear to be spinal-related. This due to the fact that the body’s inherent ability to heal itself is facilitated through, and influenced by, the spine and nervous system.

What Chiropractors Actually Do
Chiropractors effectively locate and treat vertebral subluxations.

A vertebral subluxation is an intricate complex of structural and/or pathological articular and/or functional changes that negatively affect neural integrity and may also bear negative influence upon organ function and general health.

Utilizing a range of unique and highly specialized technical skills, a doctor of chiropractic medicine examines the patient’s spinal column. The chiropractor examines for fixations, misalignments, and a variety of other abnormalities known as vertebral subluxations. If any abnormalities or vertebral subluxations are suspected, the chiropractor will take corrective action. This corrective action generally comprises a gentle, precise corrective force to the affected spinal area.

Chiropractors use a highly responsive approach by employing a wide range of specialized techniques to detect and effectively treat these vertebral subluxations and spinal abnormalities and improve overall health and wellbeing. In addition to techniques comprising spinal adjustments, specialized techniques such as massage, dietary and nutritional routines, and lifestyle adjustment methods are often applied.

How Chiropractic Medicine Differs
A difference of crucial importance exists between the method in which chiropractors and medical doctors approach health conditions and ailments.

When examining and treating patients, chiropractors employ a holistic approach which is centered upon detecting and correcting the underlying cause or causes of a patient’s health condition. In stark contrast, the medical approach to an ailment typically focuses on treating the symptom of a condition, rather than locating and alleviating the actual cause or causes.

Chiropractors operate from the belief that correcting the actual underlying cause of an ailment provides significant and desirable long-term benefits as opposed to focusing exclusively on the symptom.
